Competitive Brawl has a new shape on MTG Arena. The October 12 update adds three commanders to the format's banned list, while moving several previously fully banned cards into a more precise category: they cannot lead a deck, but they can still appear in the 99.
Competitive Brawl Gets a Clearer Commander Line
I like this distinction because it targets the games that repeatedly begin from the same difficult position without erasing every interesting use of a card. For players, that means a familiar deck may still have pieces worth keeping, while a commander slot may be the place to experiment.
This is a useful moment to revisit one deck rather than rebuild everything. I would start by asking whether its game plan depends on casting the commander early and often. If it does, try a new leader that preserves the colors or a core synergy, then play a few matches before changing the rest of the list. Small, deliberate changes make it easier to learn what actually improves the deck.
The broader signal is encouraging: Competitive Brawl is being adjusted with both power level and deck identity in mind. I will be watching how players turn these newly available cards into supporting tools, rather than automatic centerpieces.
